The long versions of petta, both M and L, were created in response to requests from our customers.
It began with a male customer who regularly wears toe socks and told us, “I’d like a longer pair of toe socks so my shins don’t show when I wear a suit.” A length that properly covers the lower leg is part of the classic dress etiquette associated with traditional British menswear. It is not something that is often considered in Japan, but I was drawn to that sense of refinement and remember wanting to work on the idea right away.
Later, we also received a request from a female customer who wanted a lightweight pair of long toe socks, which led to the creation of the M long version that covers the calf. Interestingly, the L size came first. We are very happy that both M and L were shaped by the voices of our customers.
As the name suggests, petta is thin and flat in construction. It is knitted in a two-layer structure, with 100% silk on the inside and 100% cotton on the outside. The elastic yarn is kept toward the outer layer so that silk comes into contact with the skin as much as possible. While our regular “Ashi no Hadagi” toe socks have a pile-knit interior, petta uses a flat-knit inner surface to keep the socks lightweight and thin.

Our inner and outer layers are knitted with 100% natural fiber yarns. However, socks also need elastic thread to maintain a comfortable fit and stay in place. As elastic thread made entirely from natural materials is not currently available for sock production in Japan, we use synthetic elastic thread (listed as “under thread”). We carefully design our socks so that natural fibers are in contact with the skin as much as possible.

〈About Willow Green〉
Because petta is knitted in a two-layer construction using different yarns on the inside and outside, the heel area in particular requires careful adjustment during knitting. With this production of Willow Green, we found that the lighter inner yarn appears more prominently on the right heel area.

There is no yarn breakage or thinning of the fabric, and there is no problem with comfort or durability. However, because the appearance differs when the left and right socks are placed side by side, this batch is being offered at a reduced price.

〈About Ink Heather〉
Ink Heather is a deep navy heather with a subtle blue tone, while still appearing almost black. Since both colors are very dark, the 5th photo shows Ink Heather next to Black from our Tabi Socks, Silk & Wool, so you can compare the difference.
